Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 10, 2026
Kin is built for brief, anonymous conversations. This policy explains what the service handles to connect rooms, keep people safe and remember a few local preferences.
What we collect
Kin has no accounts and never asks for your name. To limit abuse and enforce bans, it uses a random device token kept in a cookie, a salted hash of your network’s IP range and, where available, a salted hash of your browser’s characteristics. Raw IP addresses and fingerprints are not stored.
Kin also handles the room information needed to match you: your selected mode, 1-on-1 or lounge format, interests and whether common interests are required. Participants are shown temporary labels such as “Stranger,” not account names.
Conversation and reports
Text messages are relayed to people in your current room and are not intended to be a permanent profile or inbox. Reports include the selected reason, an optional note and moderation context such as the room and mode so we can investigate abuse. Moderation records may be retained as needed to enforce safety decisions and prevent repeat abuse.
Audio and video
Voice and video use your browser's permissions and the realtime media systems needed to connect a room. Kin does not present these features as a recording service. Do not share anything on camera or microphone that you would not want another participant to hear or see.
Local browser storage
Kin may use session storage for your matching preferences and temporary navigation messages. It may use local storage to remember your theme choice. These values stay in your browser and can be cleared through your browser settings.
Service providers
Depending on deployment, realtime connections and media may use infrastructure providers such as a WebSocket host, TURN service or LiveKit. Those providers process the data needed to deliver the connection under their own terms and security practices.
Your choices
You can stop searching, leave a room, turn off your microphone or camera, clear browser storage and stop using Kin at any time. Do not share personal information in a room unless you are comfortable with the other participants seeing it.
Changes
We may update this policy as Kin changes. The “Last updated” date will show when the current version was published.
